Position Summary
The Department of Entomology at the University of Georgia invites applications for a tenure-track position (9-months) in insect ecology, to be based on the Athens campus at the Assistant Professor rank.
The position includes research (70%), teaching (25%) and service (5%). The appointee will be expected to build a nationally prominent, extramurally-funded research program that complements existing strengths in the Entomology Department, as well as contribute to undergraduate and graduate teaching and mentoring. We seek a teacher-scholar with a strong commitment to engaging students both in the classroom and through research mentorship at the undergraduate, M.S., and Ph.D. levels. Teaching loads are consistent with our high expectations for research. The successful candidate may teach courses in insect ecology, aquatic entomology, general entomology, insect natural history, and/or areas appropriate given their expertise and experience. In addition to strengthening and expanding the capacity of existing programs in the department, the research program is expected to be collaborative and multidisciplinary, including elements that solve important or emerging problems identified by appropriate stakeholders. Applicants are encouraged to consider how they can engage with departmental and college facilities, including the Georgia Museum of Natural History, the UGA Black Fly lab, and the CAES Research and Education Centers. This individual is also expected to be active in departmental and university service.
Additional Requirements
Demonstrated training and expertise in field and empirical techniques in entomological, ecological and/or biological sciences; and a record of scholarly activities in their field demonstrated by peer-reviewed publications leading journals for their subject area, and evidence of potential future success in acquiring funding for research.
Relevant/Preferred Education, Experience, Licensure, and/or Certification
Postdoctoral research experience (1 or more years), prior success in competitive funding, demonstrated teaching and mentoring experience (1 or more years) , and engagement with professional societies and/or outreach are preferred.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
We seek applicants who work on any aspect of insect ecology, including aquatic and riparian insects, predator-prey and plant-insect interactions, the role insects play in ecosystems, and insect biodiversity /conservation.
Preference will be given to applicants with some substantial element of engagement with professional activities, scientific societies, and outreach.
