Special Information
- This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Opportunities for remote work are rare.
- This position is subject to the availability of funding. The incumbent is not eligible for Service Professional non-renewal notice, or Classified Staff layoff or recall status.
- This position is posted as Career Readiness Mentor (Part-Time Temporary), which is a working title. The NAU system title for this position is Part-Time Temporary.
- Driving a vehicle on behalf of the university is anticipated to be a regular part of this position. Arizona Administrative Code Fleet Safety Policy requires all employees who drive on university business become authorized by submitting Driver's license information for driving record monitoring, and completion of training appropriate to the level of driving performed. The law applies to all faculty, staff, and students who drive personal or university-owned motorized vehicles for any business purpose. More information on the NAU Authorized Driver Policy can be found on the NAU website.
- This position requires travel to various high schools throughout the northern Arizona area. The NAU Driver's Authorization training must be completed at the start of employment.
- There are two positions available, expected to conclude in July, 2026, with the potential to extend through September 30, 2026.
About the Department/College
At the Northern Arizona College Resource Center, we are committed to serving high school students across northern AZ by offering comprehensive guidance on post-secondary education and career pathways. Through our partnerships with local high schools, we provide tailored support to help students prepare for college, trade schools, and workforce opportunities. We ensure students have access to essential resources, including financial aid assistance and college readiness support. Additionally, our new initiative, Setup Youth for Success, focuses on workforce development, equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in today's job market. We are dedicated to empowering Northern Arizona's next generation of leaders and professionals.
About the Position
The Career Readiness Mentor will support the Setup Youth for Success (SYS) program by providing essential services and resources to students seeking career and workforce readiness guidance. This role involves assisting with career development workshops, one-on-one advising sessions, and administrative tasks, all aimed at helping high school students prepare for their future careers. The ideal candidate will be enthusiastic about career development for high school students, have strong communication skills, and demonstrate a commitment to supporting students in their professional journeys. This position involves significant travel and time at high schools between the hours of 7 am and 12 pm during the school week in northern Arizona. A valid driver's license is required.
Responsibilities Include
50% - Career Readiness Advising Support
- Assist in organizing and facilitating career development workshops and events.
- Provide peer-to-peer support during individual career advising sessions at northern Arizona high schools, including career exploration, post-secondary planning, resume critiques, and interview preparation.
- Help students navigate career resources and tools and post-secondary pathway options, including trade schools, certificate programs, and apprenticeships.
30% - Administrative Duties
- Maintain and update resources on the SYS Padlet webpage, including resume samples, job search guides, trade school options, and industry-specific information.
- Assist with social media post creation and YouTube SYS media content.
- Assist in scheduling and coordinating career development workshops and events.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Canva, and Google Suite. Familiarity with career development resources is preferred.
20% - Student Engagement
- Serve as a point of contact for student inquiries about career services and post-secondary planning, offering guidance and referrals as needed, holding both in person and virtual appointments.
- Assist students with using print and computerized resources to identify career paths and trade programs that match their interests and needs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in relevant field.
- 2 years of relevant experience.
*A combination of related education, experience, and training may be used as an equivalent to the above Minimum Qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in customer service or a mentoring role is a plus but not required.
- Experience working with FAFSA, scholarships and the college application process
- Prior experience working with high school youth
- A valid driver's license

Compensation
Hourly Rate begins at $21.27 - $26.59 an hour depending on experience. Annual salary commensurate with candidate's qualifications and related experience.
Pre-Employment Check
Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, an employment history verification and a degree verification (in some cases) prior to employment. You may also be required to complete a fingerprint background check. Also, as an employer in the state of Arizona, NAU is required to participate in the federal E-Verify program that assists employers with verifying new employees' right to work in the United States.
This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position. Therefore, per AZ Revised Statute, Northern Arizona University requires satisfactory results for the following: a criminal background investigation, employment history investigation, degree verification (in some cases) and fingerprinting. Notice of Availability of the Annual Fire and Security Report
Each year Northern Arizona University releases an Annual Security Report. The report is a result of a federal law known as the Clery Act. The report includes Clery reportable crime statistics for the three most recent completed calendar years and discloses procedures, practices and programs NAU uses to keep students and employees safe including how to report crimes or other emergencies occurring on campus. In addition, the Fire Safety Report is combined with the Annual Security Report for the NAU Flagstaff Mountain Campus as this campus has on-campus student housing. This report discloses fire safety policies and procedures related to on-campus student housing and statistics for fires that occurred in those facilities.
