Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
The University of Georgia, College of Veterinary Medicine is an American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care approved residency training facility for large animal resident (3 years) and fellowship (2 years) programs. This is an intermediate position structured to suit applicants who have completed specialty training DVM positions (internship and residency) prior to applying for faculty positions or private practice equivalent. The caseload is approximately 85% equine, the remainder being primarily small ruminants, new world camelids, and cattle. The incumbent will be mentored by four emergency and three critical care clinicians (DACVECC-LA/DACVS-LA / DACVIM-LAIM / ACVECC fellowship trained). The emergency critical care service is supported by four surgery clinicians, four internal medicine clinicians, five surgery residents, four internal medicine residents, and four rotating interns. On completion of the program, the incumbent will have completed the requirements for credentialing to take the board certification exam in large animal emergency and critical care.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- The incumbent will have a valid license (regular Georgia or faculty) to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Georgia or be willing to obtain and maintain a valid license (regular Georgia or faculty) to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Georgia.
- Establish and maintain effective and harmonious working relationships with faculty and technical administrative staff.
- Communicate effectively with referring veterinarians, house officers, and veterinary students.
- Residency: To be considered for the residency position, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree; have 4 years post-DVM clinical experience including the completion of an equine or large animal surgery approved by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons with preference for significant experience in in clinical, laboratory and didactic teaching of veterinary students.
- Fellowship: To be considered for the fellowship position, candidates must have a DVM or equivalent degree; have 4 years post-DVM clinical experience including the completion of an equine or large animal surgery approved by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons with preference for significant experience in in clinical, laboratory and didactic teaching of veterinary students; and be a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons-Large Animal.
- Preference given for significant experience in clinical, laboratory, and didactic teaching of veterinary students.
- Motivation to be an active and integral part of a busy large animal teaching hospital service.
- Normal working conditions for a veterinary environment.
- Lift 50 lbs.

Service:
- Participate in the Large Animal Emergency Critical Care Service of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital
Instruction:
- Participate in clinical teaching of veterinary students, interns, and residents.
- The incumbent will participate primarily in the department's relevant large animal emergency critical care rotations.
- A small amount of classroom and laboratory teaching in veterinary student courses will also be needed.
- Instructional responsibilities will be primarily under the supervision of the four emergency and critical care clinicians.
Scholarly activity:
- The incumbent will participate in scholarly activity and needed to complete at least one original manuscript during their program.
