Description
Teaching Assistant or Associate Professor in Writing (English Department)The English Department at the University of Pittsburgh welcomes applications for an Appointment Stream Teaching Assistant or Teaching Associate Professor position, primarily in the Writing Program, to begin the fall semester of 2026. Position appointments are renewable, and career advancement is possible based on need, funding, and performance. This is a full-time position outside the tenure stream, requires teaching 6 courses per academic year (typically 3-3), does not include summer teaching, and is subject to annual review. The appointment may be bargaining unit eligible.
The department is specifically interested in candidates who have an established track record in successfully teaching introductory and intermediate creative writing classes, of both single- and multi-genre focus, especially in poetry and poetic literature. The successful candidate will also be able to teach capstone-level courses, requiring intensive group and individual work with a small class of upper-level students, with demonstrated experience in fostering student professional development. The selected candidate will also have experience in Literature pedagogy and be prepared to teach courses in 20th- and 21st-century literature from a historical perspective. The English department is especially interested in applicants who have taught first-year writing and who are interested in contributing to our development of cross-programmatic curricula. The candidate should demonstrate an aptitude for service and a willingness to contribute to the mission of the department.
Applicants must hold an MFA degree in Creative Writing or a related field. Preferred qualifications include a record of superior academic teaching and professional experience; demonstrated ability to develop curriculum within broadly defined learning objectives; effective communication skills; and experience mentoring students from varied backgrounds. Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in support of an inclusive community are required.
Review of applicants will begin December 1, 2025, and will continue until the position is filled. The appointment requires administrative and budgetary approval. The position is scheduled to begin on August 15, 2026.
Teaching Load: 3/3 plus committee or supervisory assignment.
To apply, candidates should submit PDF documents of the following to the Pitt Talent Center (http://join.pitt.edu):

 - Current CV and a list of courses taught.
 - A teaching portfolio that includes a statement of teaching philosophy, sample syllabi and assignments, teaching evaluations by peers, and student surveys, for a minimum of 3 courses.
