Job Description:Primary Responsibility
The First Ascent Youth Leadership Camp Counselor is a seasonal temporary position needed one-two weeks a year, they will be responsible for leading a group of 8-10 high-school students through the annual CMC First Ascent Youth Leadership Program leading opportunities and physical activities. Staff Counselors will be responsible for organizing and managing their students, ensuring their security and safety, and meeting their individual needs. Staff Counselors also provide input and feedback to the Leadership Coordinator, Facilitators, and others about individual students and larger program concerns.
*This is a part-time, seasonal position. As per the Affordable Care Act (ACA) guidelines, the role is not eligible for benefits typically provided to full-time employees. Employment duration and hours worked may vary based on seasonal business needs. The individual hired for this position will not hold any other role at CMC during the year and will only be employed in this seasonal role to meet ACA seasonal employment requirements.
Pre-requisites for Position (Qualifications Standards)
Education and experience sufficient for the rigors of the position required, such as a High School Diploma/GED and one year related of work experience (this 1 year experience is total hours worked of 2080, equals 1 year of full time work) with at least a min of 1 week of summer camp, must be a college student who has completed their freshman year or a sophomore, junior, senior, or graduated or a measurable related experience that will provide the necessary knowledge, skill and abilities to perform the functions of the position.
Special skills or Abilities: Knowledge of running a leadership camp that inspires the learning of leadership skills and appreciation of the outdoors, for the staff and students at the camp. Turning experiences into learning, recognize effective v. ineffective methods/vehicles, provide feedback. Work directly with counselors and campers to ensure there is an enjoyable experience for all. Ability to perform vigorous physical activity in all weather conditions at high altitude (10,000'-14,000'). Ability to operate for several days with limited rest during the program.

Bilingual (English/Spanish) or conversational language abilities preferred.
This position requires the employee to be a resident of the State of Colorado and perform all work duties within the state.
This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States without the need for current or future sponsorship.
The hiring pay rate is $19.28 per hour. Benefits include retirement contribution, annual and sick time, mental health resources, and tuition benefit. CMC utilizes a wage progression compensation model that accounts for a candidate's skill and experience. Although a hiring rate is listed, this will be set commensurate with the successful candidate's qualifications and in compliance with the Equal Pay for Equal Work Act.
Position anticipated to close on April 15, 2026 or until filled.
Minimum Qualifications:
Essential Duties
1. Connect with and manage a group to ensure all are learning the leadership skills being taught.
2. Form cohesive groups and manage their growth throughout the program.
3. Coordinates and conducts experiential learning facilitation effectively in a variety of situations.
4. Effectively helping students acquire the leadership skills to meet the essentials of the program.
5. Participate in vigorous physical activities.
6. Coordinate with Leadership Coordinators to organize the camp activities.
7. Relay any student concerns to the Leadership Coordinators.
8. Provides basic intervention counseling and oversees code of conduct intervenes if campers' behaviors become a distraction to others.
9. Ensure the safety of staff and students during camp.
10. Mentor other staff for camp.
11. Work with the Leadville campus to coordinate camper housing, food service, outdoor and classroom learning opportunities/activities as requested.
12. Supports and assistants all aspects of the First Ascent program, participate as able and appropriate in the planning of the year's programs.
13. Coordinate and monitor duty coverage; provide supervision, guidance, advice, and training to students as needed.
14. Coordinate with the leadership coordinator as needed.
15. Other duties as assigned.
Supervision Received
This position reports to the First Ascent Youth Leadership Camp Facilitator and Admissions Representative.
Supervisory Responsibility
Under guidance of camp leadership, the Staff Counselor will work with a group of 8-10 clients (high school students).
Special Conditions of Employment
Successful completion of a background check including a motor vehicles records report required. Incumbents in this position will adhere to all safety and compliance policies of Colorado Mountain College while performing all duties assigned. This position will require driving and a valid Colorado driver's license; and may require altered work schedules including occasional evenings and weekends.
Working Conditions
This position requires constant sitting, occasional walking, standing, and driving; occasional handling objects, pushing/pulling; frequent reaching with hands/arms, and use of finger movements; occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects up to 50 lbs. Constant written and oral communication and the ability to reason and analyze and perform calculations occasionally. Work is performed using a computer and standard office equipment daily and driving a vehicle occasionally.
