FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
Under the general supervision of the Director of Athletics, recruit, develop, coach, and promote the
operations of the Lake Superior State University Volleyball program.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
1. Implement a student-athlete recruiting program that is consistent with institutional values,
conference, and NCAA rules.
2. Responsible for recommending to the Director of Athletics the awarding of athletic grant-in-aid in
accordance with institutional, conference, and NCAA rules.
3. Responsible for the development of players, team selection for game participation, and travel.
4. Along with Sports Performance Staff, develop and manage agility, mobility, strength and
conditioning programs.
5. Responsible for notifying the Director of Athletics and Norris Center Manager in a timely fashion
of practice schedule so that the administration of the facility can run in an orderly fashion.
6. Responsible for recommending to the Director of Athletics a schedule that meets the institutional
philosophy and that will be approved by the Faculty Athletics Representative or her/his designee.
7. Responsible for ensuring that academic scheduling is done through on-campus advisors and
Athletics Academic Support to meet the academic needs of the student–athletes and that the
student-athlete scheduling meets eligibility and progress toward degree requirements.
8. Responsible for requesting housing for players through the Director of Athletics and Housing
Director to ensure quality living conditions for the student-athletes.
9. Responsible for directing the assistant coach(es); including recommending to the Director of
Athletics the hiring, developing, and performance evaluations of assistant coaches, and scheduling the
travel of the assistant coach(es), in consultation with the supervisor of activity classes where
there may be such responsibilities.
10. Responsible for presenting a budget and working within the framework of that budget as
approved by the Director of Athletics. Major areas of budgetary control include equipment
purchases, travel, recruiting, consultation, guarantees, team costs during break periods, and
rentals.
11. Responsible for the promotion of their program and the athletic department.
12. The Head Coach is expected to follow and comply with all rules and regulations of the
department and the institution.
13. The Head Coach will be given first choice in administering youth sport camps and clinics.
Acceptance of such includes the organization and implementation of such events.
14. Promote a program environment of belonging.
15. Any activity in areas outside of the above named will require consultation and approval by the
Director of Athletics. Examples include fund raising, hiring or staff capital campaign projects.
16. Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics to promote, advance and
ensure the effective and efficient operation of LSSU.
Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor’s degree
Valid Driver’s License
Two or more years of experience as a head coach or two or more years experience as an assistant coach
at the collegiate level or club level.
Thorough knowledge of institutional, NCAA and Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference rules,
policies and regulations.
