Blue Mountain School - Floyd, Virginia Where Education Meets Wonder in the Appalachian Woods

We're a nonprofit alternative education oasis nestled in the mountains of Floyd, Virginia. We're seeking two passionate educators to join our vibrant learning community. We currently have openings for a Middle School Teacher and an Early Childhood Teacher (ages 2.5-4).

Middle School Teacher

We're looking for an educator who loves working with adolescents and values hands-on, curiosity-driven learning.

Responsibilities

• Teach core subjects
• Lead a multi-age 6th-8th grade class
• Collaborate with staff and support cross-age learning
• Facilitate SEL, mindfulness, and outdoor education
• Build strong relationships with students and families

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree + middle school teaching experience
• Strong restorative classroom management
• Excellent communication and teamwork

Preferred

• Experience weaving essential academics with project-based or Reggio Emilia inspired learning
• Comfort teaching outdoors
• SEL/mindfulness background
• Creativity, flexibility, and respect for children

Opal Early Childhood Teacher (Ages 2.5-4)

Who You Are You view young children as capable, curious learners. You bring patience, warmth, and a respect-based approach to early childhood.

What You'll Do

• Create a nurturing, Reggio Emilia inspired classroom
• Support SEL, mindfulness, and child-led exploration
• Plan developmentally appropriate activities
• Guide early social skills and independence
• Integrate outdoor learning daily
• Build strong family relationships
• Collaborate with colleagues and document learning

Requirements

• Bachelor's in Early Childhood Ed or related field or equivalent experience
• Experience with toddlers/preschoolers
• Knowledge of child development (ages 2-4)
• Strong communication skills

Preferred

• Reggio or progressive ECE experience
• SEL/mindfulness background
• Comfort outdoors
• Flexible, creative, and deeply respectful of children
