Description
Job DescriptionThe Virginia Tech Institute for Advanced Computing (IAC), in partnership with the Departments of Computer Science (CS) and Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), invites applications for tenured or tenure-track faculty positions at all ranks based in Alexandria, Virginia (Greater Washington, DC). We especially welcome candidates in quantum computing and related areas to help build the new Center for Quantum Architecture and Software Development. Appointments will be in CS or ECE, which are consistently ranked among the nation's top departments, with activities spanning the Blacksburg and Alexandria campuses.
The IAC advances world-class research and graduate education and is a key element of Virginia Tech's strategic growth in Northern Virginia. We seek collegial, interdisciplinary scholars committed to both fundamental and applied research and innovative teaching, in alignment with Virginia Tech's motto, Ut Prosim ("That I May Serve").
Located adjacent to the nation's capital, the IAC occupies an 11-story academic building opened in January 2025 overlooking the Potomac River and Reagan National Airport. The Institute currently includes 19 faculty (12 tenured/tenure-track and 7 instructional) and serves over 500 graduate students, with plans to grow to ~50 faculty and 1,800+ students by decade's end. Faculty affiliated with the Center for Quantum Architecture and Software Development will have opportunities to collaborate with the Center for Quantum Information Science and Engineering (vtq.vt.edu) in Blacksburg, which includes 15+ faculty across the Colleges of Engineering and Science. This position offers the advantages of a major metropolitan setting together with the resources of a Carnegie R1 university.
Application process: Apply at jobs.vt.edu. Required materials include a cover letter, curriculum vitae, and contact information for at least three references, plus two statements (up to three pages each): (1) research, and (2) teaching and mentoring philosophy.
Review of applications will begin on or after December 1, 2025, and continue until the position is filled.
Inquiries may be directed to Prof. Steven Flammia (stf@vt.edu) or Prof. Jamie Sikora (sikora@vt.edu).
Virginia Tech encourages participation in professional development and university shared governance, which provide valuable representation, perspective, and opportunities for impactful growth.
Required Qualifications
A PhD or PhD-equivalent doctoral degree in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related field; a record of scholarship commensurate with rank; evidence of effective collaboration; and a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research and graduate instruction. Tenured/tenure-track faculty are expected to establish an internationally recognized research program, mentor graduate students, teach effectively, and provide service to the university and profession.
