Job Description:
Budget Title: Instructional Support Assistant (SL-1)
Salary: $22,686 (part-time, 50% FTE)
The Aquatics Assistant assists with the daily operations and programming of aquatic facilities, including the West Gym Pool, within the Division of Health and Wellness Studies. Working under the supervision of the Aquatics Director and/or the Director of Health and Wellness Studies, this position provides operational, instructional, and administrative support for aquatics programming, student staff supervision, and facility oversight.
The Aquatics Assistant contributes to creating a safe, inclusive, and welcoming aquatic environment while supporting student wellness, and educational programming initiatives throughout the academic year and summer sessions.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Aquatics Operations Support
- Assist with the daily operation and supervision of aquatic facilities and programs offered in the West Gym Pool.
- Support facility scheduling for instructional programming, wellness initiatives, camps, and special events.
- Assist with monitoring pool operations, equipment readiness, and facility cleanliness.
- Help implement and enforce aquatic facility policies and safety procedures.
- Provide operational support during early mornings, evenings, weekends, academic breaks, and summer sessions as needed.
- Student Staff Supervision
- Assist with the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, and scheduling of student lifeguards and aquatic staff.
- Support ongoing staff development and in-service training sessions.
- Help monitor student staff performance and maintain appropriate certification records.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for student employees.
- Assist with supervision and coordination of summer staff, including camp and special event support personnel.
- Aquatic and Wellness Programming
- Assist with the coordination and delivery of aquatic programming at the West Gym Pool including:
- Swim classes
- Water fitness classes
- Certification courses
- Scuba courses
- Recreational and wellness events - Master's Swim (BUMS)
- Youth and summer camp programming
- Support outreach and promotional efforts for aquatic and wellness programs.
- Assist with participant registration, attendance tracking, and program assessment.
- Assist with the coordination and delivery of aquatic programming at the West Gym Pool including:
- Summer Operations and Supervision
- Assist with supervision of summer aquatic facility operations and student staffing at the West Gym Pool.
- Coordinate operational support for youth camps, conferences, orientations, and external facility rentals during summer months.
- Monitor summer facility schedules and assist with staffing adjustments to ensure safe operations.
- Support summer maintenance coordination and equipment inventory processes.
- Assist with onboarding and training of temporary and seasonal summer staff.
- Risk Management and Safety
- Support implementation of emergency action plans and risk management procedures.
- Assist with safety inspections, incident documentation, and equipment checks.
- Ensure compliance with university and industry safety standards.
- Maintain certifications and assist with staff certification tracking.
- Administrative Support
- Assist with inventory management, equipment maintenance, and supply ordering for the West Gym Pool.
- Maintain operational records, reports, and participation data for the Broome County Health Department.
- Provide customer service support to students, faculty, staff, and community participants.
- Support divisional initiatives, meetings, and collaborative programming efforts.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Experience working in aquatics, recreation, wellness programming, or related environments.
- Current certifications upon hire:
- Lifeguarding
- CPR/AED
- First Aid
- Interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, and staff.
- Ability to work in a warm, humid aquatic environment.
- Ability to respond to aquatic emergencies and assist with water rescues if necessary.
- Ability to lift and move equipment and supplies up to 50 pounds.
Preferred;
- Experience supervising or mentoring student employees.
- Experience in collegiate recreation or higher education settings.
- Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) or Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certification.
- Experience assisting with aquatic programming, camps, or special events.
- Familiarity with wellness promotion and student engagement initiatives.
