Position Summary:
The Employer Engagement and Recruitment Services Assistant Director is a member of the Employer Engagement and Recruitment Services Team and reports to the Director of Employer Engagement and Recruitment Services in Career and Professional Development.
This position serves as a primary contact, resource, and conduit for the CPD staff as well as external colleges/departments within the university, as it relates to the establishment and maintenance of employer relationships that increase internship and post- graduate job opportunities. This position is also involved either directly or indirectly in the day-to-day operations of their assigned team and Career and Professional Development as a whole.
The Employer Engagement and Recruitment Services team endeavors to positively influence the overall employer experience during the recruitment and hiring process of Virginia Tech students.
This team works to build new employer relationships and to strengthen current relationships- advancing the development of student opportunities by influencing the campus recruiting strategies and talent pipelines for employers.
Job Duties:
40% - Employer Relations/Development
Collaborate with the Director of Employer Engagement and Recruitment Services on strategic employer engagement and the fulfillment of departmental goals.
Identify and cultivate relationships with employers, with specific concentration in the Southwest VA region. Establish new recruiting relationships to increase employer engagement, involvement, and recruiting activity on campus – connecting employers with the appropriate resources and staff at the university. Employ strategies including cold calling, career fairs, site visits, etc. to increase employer interest and participation with Virginia Tech Career and Professional Development.
Identify and leverage resources to generate leads for employer recruitment through use of Handshake, local external partners, departments, print, or online job sites.
Meet with employers by phone, Zoom, or in person to assist in identifying recruitment needs and areas in which the employer can increase the organization’s brand, connect with faculty, build a talent pipeline, and increase their hiring at Virginia Tech. Set employer expectations for event participation, applicants, and student involvement.
Actively maintain partnerships with employers and provide opportunities for engagement between employers and our students/staff.
Maintain active involvement in various associations and organizations to gain industry knowledge and best practices related to recruiting as well as develop relationships with other Employer Relations professionals.
Identify employers who are interested in participating/supporting Career and Professional Development (conduct advising in CPD/participate in employer panels/special CPD events, etc.) and connect them to the appropriate CPD staff.
Compile and report mid-year and annual data on employer and student activities in Handshake including on-campus interviews, information session attendance, student applications, etc.
Communicate critical and time sensitive information to students, CPD staff, and departmental representatives as necessary.
Facilitate relationships between employers and the university community including students, faculty, etc.
30% Employer Customer Relations:
Work with employers by phone, email, and various virtual platforms (Zoom, Teams, etc.) to provide guidance related to recruiting Virginia Tech undergraduate and graduate students to include recruiting best practices as it relates to timing of events, participating in the On-Campus Interviewing Program, posting jobs, etc.
Promote Career and Professional Development services and resources available for employers.
Stay up to date with new technologies and AI, as it relates to the recruitment process.
Assist with Handshake employer and job approvals as well as the curation of jobs.
Provide employer introductions to related departments to assist in developing a recruiting relationship with specific individuals, groups, etc.
Answer incoming calls and emails as it relates to career fairs, general recruiting information, salary data, or other recruiting related needs.
Assist in the scheduling for on-campus interviews, information sessions, etc.
Assist visiting employers during their visit to Virginia Tech for On-Campus Interviews by ensuring that their needs are accommodated, and questions are answered.
Provide backup to the On-Campus Interviewing Program as needed.
15% Market Employer Relations Services:
Create and maintain (1) an up-to-date Employer Relations Guide to Recruiting at Virginia Tech and (2) a Guide to Creating an Effective Internship Program using Adobe InDesign or other approved platform. Conceptualize and generate new resources as needed to support employers seeking to recruit student talent at Virginia Tech.
Identify best practices/strategies for marketing existing programming including the On-Campus Interviewing Program, Employer Day in Residence, Partnership Program, and Handshake to employers. Collaborate with marketing staff to effectively promote existing and new opportunities for employer engagement with CPD/Virginia Tech.
Create individualized Employer Spotlight for each employer participating in the Employer Partnership Program using their logo and specific recruiting information using Adobe InDesign or other approved platform. Send spotlights to specific students, departments, and career advisors to promote the employer and their opportunities.
Assist in event planning for external employer site visits and group employer meetings.
Create and distribute monthly employer newsletter to promote resources, services, and programming with CPD and the university.
Design and implement marketing strategies to target regional employers.
Act as Employer Relations liaison to work with the design and content for the Employer Relations section of the Career and Professional Development website.
10% Advising Staff Support
Create and maintain and process to identify employers interested in participating/supporting Career and Professional Development’s advising staff by participating in employer panels, as speakers, or participation in a program.
Work with advising staff to schedule employers as needed/requested to participate in programming.
Act as an Employer Relations liaison to the Career Pathways and College Relations team and the Professional Development and Experiential Programs team.
5% Other Duties
Carry out other duties as assigned or agreed upon with the senior leadership of Career and Professional Development.
CPD staff members are currently eligible to work remotely up to 2 days per week.
Requirements
Required qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree and significant experience working in human resources, talent acquisition, career services, or a related field.
- Demonstrated history of relationship building with a service and sales orientation.
- Good communication, listening, and strategic problem-solving skills.
Preferred qualifications:
- Master’s degree and demonstrated experience working or knowledge in human resources, talent acquisition, career services, or a related field.
- Experience using Handshake software platform.
- Experience pulling and reporting data from various systems.
- Experience working with hiring organizations seeking college student candidates.
- Experience working in higher education
