Job Description:
Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)
Salary: $57,200 - $60,000
Campus Recreational Services (CRS) offers multi-faceted programs that are designed to encourage positive lifestyle choices and promote lifelong learning through both wellness and physical activity. The department manages the Recreation Center at the East Gym and operates the following program areas: Fitness, Open Recreation, Aquatics, Intramural Sports, Club Sports, Outdoor Pursuits and Wellness Services. Through these programs the department serves approximately 80% of undergraduate students, as well as graduate students, faculty & staff, alumni, university affiliates and community members. We recently broke ground on a 75,000 sq. ft. expansion which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2026. Expansion plans include increased fitness space, four additional multi-use courts, three wood courts and an indoor elevated track.
The position reports to the Associate Director. In coordination with the Associate Director the Assistant Director of Operations and Staff Development is responsible for providing professional expertise to the day-to-day operations of the East Gym Recreation Center. This position will provide oversight and direction to the Member Service Staff and Building Managers. A strong focus will be on facility oversight, member services, student staff hiring, training, coaching, and evaluation.
Facility Management
- Develop and monitor facility operations, open recreation and aquatics budgets
- Direct the daily operations of the front desk including managing building access for members and participants
- Assist supervisor with the daily operations of the East Gym including monitoring the maintenance of all areas and equipment
- Support staff in managing customer service issues related to the facility
- Collaborate with student and professional staff with the coordination of special events and facility rentals in the East Gym
- Supervise the locker and laundry operations
- Collect and compile department utilization statistics
- Manage the equipment inventory including regular inspection of supplies and inventory
Personnel Management
- Supervise the Program Coordinator for Aquatics
- Supervise the Program Coordinator for Facilities and Events
- Provide daily supervision of the facility operations staff (building supervisors and front desk attendants) ensuring the facility is fully staffed during open hours
- Supervise the Graduate Assistant for Facility Operations
- Interview, hire, schedule, train and evaluate student staff
- Assist with the Wellness Services operations
- Plan and conduct student staff in-service trainings and meetings
- Plan fall and spring student staff trainings for the department
- Collaborate with campus partners identify learning and development opportunities for student staff
- Coordinate the Graduate Assistant recruiting, hiring and placement process for the department including managing the human recourse processes.
- Monitor student and professional staff American Red Cross certifications are up to date
Risk Management
- Respond to patron inquiries, follow-up and monitor incident and accident reports
- Monitor the completion of facility pre-activity checklists and monthly facility checks
- Train student staff in emergency action procedures, prepare emergency plans and facilitate regular spot checks
- Obtain American Red Cross instructor certification and instruct trainings as needed
Other
- Serve as Essential Employee during inclement weather
- Participate in all departmental trainings, retreats and meetings
- Serve on division and department committees as assigned
- Some evening and weekend hours will be required
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree in Education, Recreation Management or related field
- At least 2 years of relevant experience, including supervision of student staff
Preferred
- Master's Degree in Higher Education, Recreation Management or related field
- At least five years of relevant experience. Employment as a graduate assistant will be considered in the five years of experience.
- Experience in student development and hiring, managing, scheduling and training student staff
- Experience in a university, community, or commercial fitness and recreation center
