Description
New Mexico State University invites applications for two tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in Applied Artificial Intelligence. Faculty will join an interdisciplinary cluster hire in applied AI and be affiliated with NMSU’s new Institute for Applied Practice in AI and Machine Learning.
We seek an AI generalist whose primary focus is the teaching, learning, and educational integration of artificial intelligence. Relevant areas of scholarship may include AI pedagogy, curriculum design, flexible credentialing, responsible AI education, workforce development, and effective approaches for teaching AI to students, educators, professionals, and community members.
Responsibilities
Faculty in this position will:
- Conduct innovative research on AI teaching, learning, curriculum, credentialing, and educational integration.
- Develop a productive, externally funded research program.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in artificial intelligence and its applications.
- Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to integrate AI into academic programs and curricula.
- Lead the development of AI-focused microcredentials, certificates, and other flexible learning pathways.
- Develop and deliver AI training and workforce-development programs for audiences within and beyond the university.Advise and mentor undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students.
- Contribute to professional, institutional, and community service.
- Support the educational activities of the Institute for Applied Practice in AI and Machine Learning.
- Help advance NMSU’s role as a leader in AI education across New Mexico and the broader region.

Requirements
Applicants must have:
- Earned Ph.D. by the time of hire in a field relevant to the position, such as artificial intelligence, computer or computational science, learning sciences, education, or an AI-related applied field (e.g., agriculture or manufacturing).
- Demonstrated expertise in AI education, curriculum development, credentialing, pedagogy, or the educational integration of AI.
- Evidence of scholarly productivity or high potential to conduct research related to AI education, educational frameworks, curriculum design, or pedagogy.
- Experience or strong potential to secure external funding for AI or computing education research and program development.
- A demonstrated commitment to excellence in teaching, curriculum development, and student mentoring.
- The ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary academic environment.
Experience includes one or more of the following:
- Developing microcredentials, certificates, or professional training programs.
- Integrating AI into curricula outside traditional computing disciplines.
- Teaching or researching responsible AI practices.Supporting students from a range of educational and professional backgrounds.
- Building partnerships for workforce development, community education, or interdisciplinary programming.
