Description
The Association of Teacher Educators (ATE) is seeking an organized, collaborative, and service-oriented professional to serve as our Director of Business Operations & Membership Management. This part-time leadership position is ideal for someone who enjoys balancing financial and operational management with exceptional member service in a mission-driven nonprofit organization.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, this position is responsible for supporting the day-to-day business operations of ATE while ensuring an outstanding experience for our members and conference participants.

Founded in 1920, the Association of Teacher Educators is the only national individual membership organization devoted exclusively to the improvement of teacher education. Our members represent more than 650 colleges and universities and 500 school systems across the United States. Through conferences, publications, professional learning, and advocacy, ATE advances excellence in teacher preparation and educator development.
Position Summary
The Director of Business Operations & Membership Management oversees key administrative, financial, membership, and operational functions that support the Association's continued success. Working closely with the CEO, accounting partners, vendors, volunteers, and members, this individual helps ensure efficient operations while delivering exceptional customer service.
Key Responsibilities
Business Operations
Coordinate financial processes with the CEO and external accounting firm, including QuickBooks records and financial reporting.
Assist with annual budgeting, financial forecasting, and audit preparation.
Manage vendor relationships and support contract development and renewals.
Oversee conference registration systems, billing coordination, and event-related administrative processes in partnership with CEO and Director of Information Technology Services.
Support logistics for meetings, workshops, and conferences, including registration, travel coordination, shipping, audiovisual needs, and budget monitoring.
Membership Management
Maintain and manage the membership database, ensuring accurate records and timely membership renewals.
Provide outstanding customer service to current and prospective members.
Coordinate conference registration operations and onsite registration support.
Assist with membership recruitment, engagement, and retention initiatives.
Identify and implement opportunities to improve operational efficiency and organizational effectiveness including campaigns to reach prospective members.
Prepare and email regular communications covering updates, announcements, and newsletters.
Provide reports and membership statistics, retention data, conference performance metrics, financial summaries, donations segmentation, and related reports for organizational needs.
Collaborate with the Director of Information Technology Services on system integrations, website updates, and member-facing technology.
Use email analytics (open-rates, etc.) to reflect on, identify, and implement improvements to the overall membership experience including first-time member onboarding and communication with established-renewing members.
Leadership & Organizational Support
Serve as a member of ATE's national office leadership team.
Advise the CEO on operational and membership matters.
Represent the national office on committees, projects, and organizational initiatives.
Build productive relationships with educational partners, vendors, and stakeholders.
Perform other duties that support the mission and operations of the Association.
Requirements
Qualifications
Ideal candidates will possess:
Experience in nonprofit, association, higher education, or membership organization administration.
Knowledge of financial operations, budgeting, and accounting processes (QuickBooks experience preferred).
Experience managing databases or association management systems.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google workspace, and virtual meeting platforms.
Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities while working independently.
Strong customer service orientation and attention to detail.
Experience supporting conferences or professional events is highly desirable.
Bachelor’s degree preferred, minimum of Associate’s degree required.
