- Faculty Position in Sports Analytics in IOE
Description
The Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering (IOE) at the University of Michigan (U-
M) welcomes applications for a faculty position at mid-career or higher rank (associate, and full
professor) in the area of Sports Analytics (SA) for an appointment beginning in August 2027. Note
that an assistant professor with an exceptional track record may be considered. SA represents
an expansive field that connects disciplines within and beyond the college of engineering in the
shared pursuit of understanding performance, decision-making, and human movement. This is
part of a campus-wide faculty expansion program directed towards building a campus-wide
cluster focused on SA. The new cluster is expected to leverage and augment IOE’s enduring
strengths in optimization, stochastics, data analytics, statistics, machine learning, and human
factors. Our multidisciplinary department integrates theoretical, methodological, and applied
research interests. We are seeking individuals with an enduring commitment in sports analytics
from fields that include but are not restricted to operations research, human factors, statistics,
applied mathematics, and computer science. The ideal candidate will have a track record of
excellence in both research as well as graduate and undergraduate education and a
demonstrated ability to establish independent and externally-funded research programs in their
fields of expertise. Particular attention will be placed on candidates who embrace the global
outlook, leadership focus, and service commitment that are fundamental to the culture of Michigan
Engineering. Naturally, the search will place a greater emphasis on senior candidates who have
an established record of scholarship and innovation in the field and have the potential to build an
impactful and expansive research program in SA.
