Position Description

The Council on Southeast Asia Studies (CSEAS) at the Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale University invites applications for a Lector in Vietnamese with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2027. The initial appointment will be for three years, with the possibility of renewal depending on successful performance and ongoing curricular need. Full-time Lectors at Yale teach six courses or the equivalent per academic year, which may be realized as five term courses with a sixth course equivalent of advising and/or other administrative service.

Primary duties each academic year will include teaching elementary courses and intermediate courses in Vietnamese in four learning-skill areas: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. Additional advanced language courses will focus on literary, social, political, cultural and/or sociolinguistics topics related to Vietnamese (as determined on the basis of the appointee’s qualifications and expertise). The Lector will advise students and work alongside Yale’s Indonesian and Filipino (Tagalog) language lectors to engage in program building of Southeast Asian Studies at Yale, specifically, in developing overseas language and other study opportunities. They will also engage in developing the broad curriculum and the pedagogic materials for Vietnamese.

We are especially interested in candidates whose language and content expertise will complement existing cross-disciplinary scholarship in CSEAS. The successful candidate may also be expected to teach through Yale’s shared course initiative, in which language classrooms across partner institutions are connected via advanced videoconferencing.

CSEAS lectors are encouraged to participate in the wide range of professional development opportunities offered through the MacMillan Center, the Center for Language Study, the Poorvu Center for Teaching and Learning, and the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Office.

Full-time lectors are eligible for Yale’s generous package of benefits, including health coverage. Salary and rank are commensurate with experience and qualifications. If the initial appointment is at the rank of Lector, a promotion review for Senior Lector I must take place in the fifth year or earlier. Senior Lectors at Yale are expected to participate in teaching-related professional activities (e.g., workshops, seminars, training activities, conferences) and have no limits on reappointment, provided the performance is successful and there is ongoing curricular need. 

Qualifications
The successful candidate must have: 1) native or near-native fluency in Vietnamese; 2) proficiency in English; 3) a bachelor's degree or the equivalent, by the time of hire; 4) experience in teaching Vietnamese as a second language in a college or university environment. It is strongly preferred that the applicants have: 1) an M.A. or other advanced degree in Southeast Asian languages/literatures/linguistics, second language pedagogy, second language acquisition (SLA), applied linguistics, or other related field; and 2) demonstrated ability and enthusiasm for in-class teaching/acquisition, familiarity with language training programs in Southeast Asia, experience with technologically aided language learning methods and their development, interest in the broader field of Southeast Asian Studies and/or other relevant disciplines.
