Description
Position OverviewLecturers at the University of Kansas (KU) are untenured, non-tenure-track members of the faculty with limited term appointments, whose primary role is instructional. The AEC Lecturer is responsible for teaching courses in the Applied English Center on the Lawrence campus and for the Joint Institute at Zhejiang Normal University (ZJNU) in Jinhua, China, or other location in the fall and spring semesters. Summer employment may be available based on enrollment and unit needs. This is a benefits eligible appointment. Continuing appointment is contingent on funding and successful performance reviews. Candidates must have valid work authorization at the time of hire.
This position is subject to a collective bargaining agreement between The University of Kansas and United Academics, that UAKU is the exclusive representative for the bargaining unit, and that it is their right to be a member or not be a member of a union without fear of personal or professional repercussions.
Job Description
Instructional Duties (100%)
- Teach 15 credit hours/week or the equivalent in the Applied English Center (e.g., intensive English program, TEFL certificate program) or International Short Programs on the Lawrence campus and at least one term per year at ZJNU in Jinhua, China or other location as assigned
- May have one 3-hour course release to perform other duties (e.g., advising, program development, SPEAK assessment) depending on unit needs and resources
- Teach assigned courses according to the published schedule of classes
- A typical KU semester is 16 weeks + final exams; a typical term at ZJNU is 8 weeks + final assessment
- Develop syllabi, course materials, and curricula in alignment with program outcomes and accreditation criteria
- Assess student work and provide feedback in a timely manner
- Communicate with students and colleagues in a courteous and timely manner
- Keep accurate records and post grades and attendance in Canvas
- Maintain regular office hours and attend AEC meetings and professional development sessions
- Assist with administrative duties (e.g., proficiency testing, placement, advising, registration) which may occur outside the semester (e.g., orientation week) and other duties as assigned
- Adhere to all unit and University policies
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in TESL/TEFL/TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related field and 3 years of experience teaching English as an additional language to multilingual learners of English OR Bachelor's degree in TESL/TEFL/TESOL, Applied Linguistics or related field and 5 years of experience teaching English as an additional language to multilingual learners of English
- Excellent proficiency in English per Kansas Board of Regents' Spoken English Language Competency policy
- Ability and willingness to travel outside the U.S. to teach at least one term each academic year for a minimum of 8 consecutive weeks
