Position Summary – Long-Term Substitute Secondary Art Teacher : The Mary Walker School District is seeking a highly qualified, collaborative, creative, and student-centered educator to serve as a Long-Term Substitute Secondary Art Teacher for the first semester of the 2026-2027 school year, with the possibility of an extension. This position primarily serves students at Mary Walker High School (grades 9-12) while also providing instruction to Springdale Middle School students (grades 6-8). The successful candidate will work under the general supervision of the high school principal and will support student growth in artistic skills, creativity, critical thinking, and personal expression through engaging, standards-based visual arts instruction.

The successful candidate will create an inclusive, positive, and engaging classroom environment where students are encouraged to develop artistic techniques, explore a variety of media, and express themselves creatively while meeting Washington State Visual Arts Learning Standards. Responsibilities include planning and delivering instruction across multiple secondary grade levels; assessing and documenting student learning; maintaining a safe and organized art classroom; communicating regularly with students, families, and staff; and collaborating with colleagues to support student success.

Requirements

Qualifications - Long-Term Substitute Secondary Art Teacher:

Successful candidates are educators who inspire creativity, artistic expression, and a lifelong appreciation for the visual arts. 

Valid Washington State Teaching Certificate with an Art endorsement (or ability to obtain prior to the start date)
Demonstrated experience teaching visual arts at the middle school and/or high school level preferred
Strong knowledge of visual arts techniques, media, art history, design principles, and Washington State Arts Learning Standards
Ability to design and deliver engaging, standards-based instruction for students with diverse academic abilities and artistic experience
Knowledge of effective classroom management practices within a hands-on art studio environment
Ability to safely supervise students while utilizing a variety of art materials, equipment, and instructional technologies
Experience integrating creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving into daily instruction
Ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of a diverse student population
Commitment to culturally responsive teaching and creating an inclusive classroom environment where all students feel valued
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple courses and grade levels
Ability to effectively assess student learning and provide timely, meaningful feedback
Strong communication skills with students, families, and colleagues
Ability to collaborate effectively within Professional Learning Teams (PLTs) and interdisciplinary teams
Proficiency with educational technology and digital art tools appropriate for secondary instruction
Demonstrated professionalism, reliability, flexibility, and the ability to maintain confidentiality
Evidence of ongoing professional growth and willingness to learn district instructional practices
Ability to establish positive relationships with students while promoting high expectations and student engagement
Other duties as assigned by the building principal and/or district administration
