Position Summary
The Microbiology Department invites applications for a Laboratory Manager to support its teaching laboratories. This position is essential to maintaining high standards of laboratory readiness, safety, and instructional quality.
Primary responsibilities include preparing microbiological and specialized media, chemical reagents, and laboratory materials while ensuring sterility and rigorous quality control. The Laboratory Manager will troubleshoot preparation issues, monitor consistency across lab sections, and maintain best practices for aseptic technique. Additional duties include managing inventory, ordering supplies, and overseeing the proper disposal of biohazardous and chemical waste in compliance with safety regulations.
This role also involves coordinating routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment, as well as handling weekly setup and breakdown of teaching labs and general facility upkeep. The Laboratory Manager will assist with the orientation and training of Graduate Student Teaching Assistants, ensuring adherence to laboratory protocols and standards, and will supervise student employees who support lab preparation and operations.

Preparation of microbiological media, chemical reagents and supplies for teaching labs using sterile technique. This position is also responsible for washing glassware and plastic ware used in the teaching labs.

Order supplies for all lab courses; manage inventory for teaching labs and media prep room in the CampusOptics system; assess the consumables stocks on a weekly basis. General maintenance of the teaching labs and associated workspace; make sure teaching labs are cleaned on a weekly basis. Restock supplies in teaching labs, refilling disinfectants and stains, emptying staining trays, clean water baths, and general maintenance. Arrange for the laundry of lab coats. Assist with managing immediate lab needs during classes.
