Position Overview
The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Department of Music invites applications for adjunct (part-time) artist-teachers of voice. The successful candidate will teach weekly private lessons beginning in the Fall 2026 semester, which starts on August 25, 2026. The per-semester contract may be renewable.
Responsibilities
- Give weekly in-person private lessons (for both music majors, minors, and non-music majors) on TCNJ's campus (Ewing, NJ) at mutually agreed dates between the instructor and the students, following the College's academic calendar, i.e., leading 14 weekly lessons per semester.
- Provide course syllabi, and submit course audits, mid-term, and final grades in a timely manner.
- Attend voice jury exams each semester during the final exam week.
- Attend degree recitals of students in the voice studio.
- Participate in entrance auditions of prospective voice students.
- Additional teaching opportunities with voice related course(s) may be available depending on the departmental needs and candidate's expertise and availability.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- Earned MM degree in vocal performance, vocal pedagogy, or other vocal specialization.
- Proven record of high-level artistry and performance experience in solo, opera, and/or musical theater settings.
- Experience with planning, programming, and coaching undergraduate degree recitals and opera/musical theater role preparation.
- Private studio teaching experience with various levels and genres (classical and musical theater repertoires) including collegiate-level instruction (including as a TA).
- Piano skills commensurate with vocal exercises and simple accompaniments.
- The availability and commitment to teach weekly in-person (Ewing, NJ) during the semester.
- Outstanding organizational and interpersonal skills, including timely communication via email.
Preferred Qualifications
- Mezzo-soprano, contralto, baritone, or bass.
- Earned DMA or ABD in vocal performance.
- Familiarity with K-12 teaching and/or vocal pedagogy.
- A demonstrable record or potential for student recruitment in and beyond the region, and involvement in professional organizations such as NATS.
- Experience in teaching voice-related courses, including Diction, Vocal Pedagogy, and/or Opera/Stage Direction, including the ability to lead the opera theater.
