Job Description:
Budget Title: Instructional Support Associate (SL-2)
Salary: $42,995+ DOE (10-month, college-year)
Binghamton University Theater is seeking a Scenic Artist with carpentry skills to fill a combination Scenic Artist/Assistant Technical Director position. This position will participate in the building, movement, and installation of stage scenery and be responsible for painting, or supervising students' painting of, the scenery as designed by the Scenic Designer for the production. The Department is committed to inclusive undergraduate teaching/mentoring for our diverse and ambitious student body and that models effective collaborative skills.
Duties:
- Be responsible for the painting of all scenic elements based on paint elevations, painted models and paint research provided by the scenic designer
- Supervise students painting the scenic elements and teach basic skills as needed
- Maintain the paint area, paint supplies and equipment
- Create a painting plan for each show and help budget paint costs for shows
- Participate in the construction and rigging of scenery, rough and finish carpentry, and installation of scenic elements
- In conjunction with other production staff members, ensure proper training of students in the use of scene shop tools and equipment
- Supervise students in execution of scenery/prop creation and prop run duties during production, build, load-in, technical rehearsals, strikes, and other projects as needed
- Participate in the organization and maintenance of the scene shop, its equipment and supplies and all performance spaces
- Be familiar with and enforce applicable theater and shop safety codes and practices
- Be comfortable working at heights on ladders and personnel lifts
- Advise, aid and supervise students in painting for Studio Season shows with scenery
- Assist with events in the Theater Dept.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's Degree
- 2 or more years of experience working in a paint shop/scene shop in a professional or academic setting
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, paint elevations and design drawings
- Portfolio/sample collection
Preferred:
- Master's Degree in Theater
- Demonstrated CAD drafting skills
